Three pairs of Antarctic penguins have found a "home" in Dubai

Penguins were delivered to the Underwater Zoo, located on the territory of Dubai Mall, the largest shopping center in Dubai, and presented to the public. Specialists at Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo created a “stand” for the “new settlers” that imitates the natural environment familiar to Papuan penguins: an ice layer, water from the surface layers of the ocean and ambient temperature, always at zero or minus Celsius.

Six Gentoo penguins, three males and three females, joined the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo community, which already has Humboldt penguins or Peruvian penguins that prefer warm weather and nest on the rocky coasts of Chile and Peru.

The papuan penguin is a species from the genus of Antarctic penguins, related to the Adelie penguins. After the emperor and king penguins, the papuan is the largest. Males reach a weight of 9 kg, females - 7.5 kg. Adult growth is 75-90 cm. Under water, papuan penguins can reach speeds of up to 36 km / h, which makes them the fastest of all penguins. The depth of their immersion can reach - 200 m.

Papuan penguins feed on krill, less often - small fish. The natural enemies of the species are killer whales, sea lions and leopards. Seabirds do not pose a threat to adults, but threaten eggs and chicks.

The female usually lays two eggs, both parents incubate the clutch, on average, 34 days, alternating after a few days. After 14 weeks, the chicks begin to go to sea.
