Roger Glover gave us an exclusive telephone blitz interview when Deep Purple was on tour in Chile before arriving in Dubai.
Roger, what is the Deep Purple program at Dubai Bike Week?
The group is over forty years old, so we have something to show the audience. We will play potpourri from old known compositions and completely new songs. Of course, there will be High Way Star, and Smoke on the Water, and others.
Deep Purple is very popular in Russia. How do you feel about your Russian fans?
To be honest, we didn’t even know that in the 70s numerous fans in the USSR listened to our music. Then you lived behind the Iron Curtain. And when we first went on tour to Russia 15 years ago, we were amazed by the large army of fans of our music. Now we tour quite often in Russia. And we are very pleased that one of our biggest fans is Dmitry Medvedev, the Russian President.
Do you think today's youth is listening to rock?
Today's young people have different music - rap, R&B. But those who understand that rock is live music love it and listen. I can say that at our concerts now more and more young people. So there is something in rock that makes them think and feel the way we do.
Have you been to Dubai?
Yes, about 12 years ago. Then there was no such city. Yes, and we were different. So, let's celebrate! We have become different, and Dubai has changed. We are very different, but this is the beauty!
What do you expect from a performance at Dubai Bike Week?
I have not expected anything from new countries and sites for a long time. If you wait, you can be disappointed if the expectations are not fulfilled. I just think it's great that we are together again and can give our music to those who still remember the good old Deep Purple.
Thanks Roger, and see you in Dubai.
We are waiting for you at our concert. Until.
