73-year-old resident of Dubai will spend 5 years in prison for assaulting a policeman

An elderly woman and her daughter are sentenced to prison for assaulting a Dubai police officer.

In Dubai, a 73-year-old woman was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting a policeman who was about to arrest her son on drug charges.

A Dubai court also sentenced the woman's 38-year-old daughter to three years in prison. Her second daughter was found not guilty.

A police officer testified that he went to the defendant’s villa on November 14, 2015, to arrest her son based on information received about his drug use.

"When we knocked on the door of her house in Al Barsha, his man, who was supposed to be initially detained, his sister asked us to wait until she and the other women in the house get dressed appropriately," said an anti-drug police officer.

After that, an elderly woman of Emirate descent, the mistress of the house, attacked a policeman.

“She screamed at me and then hit me in the face,” the officer said. He said that the daughters of the woman began to insult him, and one of them pushed him.

The officer said the women tried to give their son the opportunity to escape. However, he was also detained.

In February, the main defendant visited the trial in a wheelchair, and her lawyer said she was hard of hearing. The mother and her daughters denied the charges of assault and insult.

Convicted women were also fined 20 thousand dirhams ($ 5.2 thousand) each.
