Abu Dhabi Coast May Be Flooded

Abu Dhabi's coastline could change dramatically by 2100 due to rising sea levels.

Rising sea levels could cause the coast of Abu Dhabi to be flooded by 2100, the researchers said.

With rising sea levels, the coastline in Abu Dhabi may decrease by 2.26 - 3.81 km.

The first author of the study, Dr. Stephen Lokier, professor at Petroleum Institute Abu Dhabi, said that according to measurements, the effects of climate change for Abu Dhabi are likely to be more serious than expected, given how fast sea levels rise.

The Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency reported that it has conducted a number of studies on climate change, including one on sea level rise.

"It is difficult to say with certainty what the real level of sea level rise in 2100 will be, but, of course, some increase will occur," the agency said.

The agency reported that the Abu Dhabi Plan for 2030 takes this factor into account.

The coastline of Abu Dhabi is 760 km. 68 percent of the emirate’s economy is associated with the coastal zone. In addition, 900 thousand people, or 42 percent of the population, live in the coastal zone of the emirate.
