Introduced semi-autonomous INFINITI QX50 with a virtual “navigator”

Today at the North American International Auto Show-2017 (North American International Auto Show (NAIAS)), held in Detroit, USA, INFINITI introduced the technology of autonomous driving “co-pilot”.

The main feature in the development of all auxiliary unmanned systems of the future is that they must provide the driver with complete control over the vehicle. This aspect is consistent with INFINITI's emphasis on driving experience and driver involvement. Therefore, the new technology expands the possibilities, and does not replace the person, acting as a “co-pilot” and is responsible for managing minor tasks, such as ensuring a safe start and stop on the highway or tracking the position of surrounding cars.

Co-pilot technologies were demonstrated using the QX50 concept car, which will also debut at the show. The presentation shed light on the appearance of the future premium SUV.

Since its inception in 1989, INFINITI has been providing customers with innovative technologies designed to help drivers. The company is immediately responsible for creating a number of breakthrough innovations in the field of semi-autonomous technologies, including the Predictive Forward Collision Warning (frontal collision warning), Direct Adaptive Steering (adaptive steering through an on-board computer) and Active Lane Control (active lane control) .

Roland Krueger, president of INFINITI, commented: “INFINITI customers love driving and our approach to driving autonomously reflects this. Providing drivers with their own pilot, the QX50 Concept paves the way for the future integration of INFINITI's co-pilot autonomous driving technology, rethinking how the driver interacts with the car. ”

The co-pilot is designed to improve road safety by helping the driver identify and respond to the behavior of other road users and potential threats. The technology uses data from scanners, radars and cameras to analyze the situation in front of the road and to monitor objects located near the car, which allows the car to react accordingly.

The novelty combines all existing and upcoming autonomous INFINITI technologies. The “co-pilot” in the QX50 Concept is essentially the first, ready-made embodiment of this innovation before its launch.
