Roberto, do you still come up with your own jewelry?
Roberto: For 98 percent of the design of all jewelry I design myself.
Where did you get so much creativity from?
Roberto: Firstly, I have always loved art, sculpture, paintings and life in general. Secondly, creativity cannot be learned at school or elsewhere - you must be born with this. And if you do not have creativity, then a problem arises. From the earliest years, even when I was at school in Switzerland, I lived in London, in New York, traveled to Dubai in the 80s and traveled around the world, creativity was an integral part of my life. If you like something, you begin to pay attention to it. And when you pay attention to something, you train your imagination. My imagination still works every minute of my day.
And at the same time, you are also a rather successful businessman, because your jewelry house has existed for almost 40 years.
Roberto: And this is a rather dangerous combination. Before joining the jewelry business, I was an entrepreneur. At 18, I bought a cafe, then a restaurant, then a hotel, and then sold everything. At the same time, I was always interested in fashion - from shoes to hats and other accessories. I was even a fashion critic of events like the Grammy Awards, Golden Globe and Oscars. In addition, I do interior design, as I like to combine different things and textures. I myself furnished my house in Vincenza. So I'm far from a boring comrade. I love beauty and collect everything that is beautiful. Beauty gives me a feeling of happiness. And believe me, not everyone can recognize and identify true beauty.
You have created the world's largest animalistic jewelry collection - 172 items. Tell us how you came up with your famous ring in the shape of a lion’s head?
Roberto: I come from Venice, the city of lions. At the same time, I am an innovator by nature and wanted to create a ring that no one has done before. I wanted to be different. And when you want to be different, you begin to look for ways and come up with. In this ring, for example, more than 700 scales that create a mane, and all this is done manually.
What has not yet been invented in jewelry?
Roberto: A lot. There are no such trends in the jewelry world. Each jeweler comes up with his own direction. I have a fashion direction, which many are copying now. And you know, beautiful things don't have to be expensive at all. You can take only two colors and, using them, make 80 different product options. Creativity is endless.
What helps you stay afloat for so long?
Roberto: I am well versed in women. And follow the fashion. When women go to the store, I know what they want - they want to see something new. You can always find something new in Roberto Coin stores, because we produce more than 600 products a year! But if you want to start somewhere, buy one of our rings.
What does a woman want?
Roberto: Different women - different requirements. Different ages - different needs. Different husbands - different requests.
Ultimately, every woman wants to be better, and my task is to decorate them. For example, not all colors of stones can suit you - you need to understand this. The more Nordic the appearance, the more light stones should be. I love pink gold, as it is very feminine, but people from Russia still think that it reminds of the Soviet era. So every woman needs something different. There are thousands of answers.
Maybe that's why the most famous jewelers are men?
Roberto: Our world is still mostly masculine. But there are also very talented women jewelers.

Roberto: I wake up happy in the morning and go to bed happy. I have the same problems as all people on earth. But I do not perceive them as problems. I perceive them as the work that I have to do. I love sports, good food, good wine and good company.
I love friends and try to always be real, the way I really am. I live intensively and value many things. Today, in order to be happy, you must have knowledge. I never feel sad or miss you. Why? Because I have a beautiful library inside. And I can dream, see the future, and constantly think up something.
