La Biennale di Venezia. To remember

The Venice Architecture Biennale has been held since 1980 and is considered the most authoritative architectural exhibition in the world, where all the current trends in architecture for the next two years are determined. This year, she is supervised by Rem Koolhaas, and the show itself will include three interconnected exhibits:

"Absorbing Modernity (1914-2014)." National expositions will be presented in the pavilions, the main idea of which is to show the gradual blurring of cultural boundaries.

"Elements of architecture". The exhibition is dedicated to the fundamental foundations of construction that every architect uses, anywhere and anytime.

Monditalia. The focus is on the only topic - Italy, its cultural life: exhibitions, concerts, theatrical performances.

Exhibitions will be placed in the pavilions of Giardini, Arsenal and other exhibition halls of the city. This year there will be unusually many participating countries - 65, 11 of them will be presented at the Biennale for the first time. The pavilion of each country will show how its architecture underwent a transition from a well-defined national school of the beginning of the 20th century to a global “modern language”.

The Russian pavilion will show the Fair Enough exhibition led by a team of curators from the Strelka Institute, led by Anton Kalgaev, Brendan Makgetrik and Daria Paramonova. It will become a kind of atlas of the most relevant architectural ideas implemented in Russia over the past century, will look into the future of world architecture through the prism of the history of Russian architectural thought.

The UAE National Pavilion will be presented by the Sheikh Salami Bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation. Michelle Bambling, well known for her studies of the urban environment, was appointed curator of the pavilion.

The exhibition “To Remember” will be created in collaboration with researchers Adina Hemple, Marco Sosa and Hanan Saed Vorrel. The focus is on the first construction projects and the manifestations of modernism in the national architecture of the 70-80s. Using empirical recordings of architects and engineers, voices and photographs of residents, the exposition will demonstrate the adaptation of architecture to the culture and climatic conditions of the region in which galloping development is taking place today. According to Sheikh Salama, the mission of the exposition in 2014 is to participate in a lively cultural exchange, to present the UAE on the global cultural scene. Emirates have been participating in the Biennale since 2009 and became the first Gulf country to debut at this show.

Today, the United Arab Emirates is one of the fastest growing countries in the world, and its participation in La Biennale di Venezia is a natural step to showcase its architectural heritage and urban achievements. The exposition will be presented in the Arsenal pavilion.
