From March 2011, UAE citizens will begin to receive electronic passports

The UAE Ministry of Internal Affairs has completed all preparatory procedures necessary for issuing electronic passports to citizens of the country. Regular passports of UAE citizens will be replaced by electronic ones starting in late March 2011.

Electronic passports will be issued to UAE citizens as their regular paper passports expire. The new biometric passports of the emirates are an example of advanced technology and security that fully complies with international standards. The degree of protection of these passports will be so high that it will be practically impossible to fake them.

The electronic chip, which is part of the electronic passport, is able to store a large amount of text information and biometric data of its owner. The fee for issuing an electronic passport will be the same as for issuing a new paper passport
