Dubai authorities will teach to respect the "zebra" with the help of radars

Dubai police began installing a new type of radar camera at Dubai’s potentially dangerous pedestrian crossings in order to train motorists to respect the zebra and the traffic lights installed on it.

The decision to install CCTV cameras was made after one of the test cameras, installed in Jumeirah next to a public park, photographed 14 cars driving a zebra at a traffic light in 10 hours. Three other cameras installed on the Al-Wasl highway in the direction of Um-Suqeyma also collected a considerable amount of photo evidence of traffic violations.

According to the team leader, Mohammed Safe Al Zaffain, director of the Dubai Police Department, the law provides for a fine of 800 dirhams, 8 “black points” and confiscation of the car for up to two weeks.

Some violators caught in the cameras were given fines of 2000 dirhams, 12 “black points” and two weeks of confiscation of the car, since their unreasonable behavior could potentially endanger people's lives. AlZaffain said that soon new radars will appear in many areas of Dubai.
