In the UAE, cars are equipped with an accident warning system

In 2021, vehicles supplied to the UAE market will be equipped with an innovative accident warning system.

Last week, the OAU Cabinet adopted the technical regulations of the UAE Standardization and Metrology Service (ESMA) for the emergency communication system in vehicles - ECall. The system aims to reduce the response time in road traffic accidents by 40 percent.

Abdullah Al Maini, head of Esma, said that the ECall system will be installed in the UAE on a 2021 model car. The cars themselves will be introduced to the UAE market in 2020.

ECall is the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa.

The ECall system is triggered when two vehicles collide with each other or when a car hits an object, and then reports the incident to the nearest emergency center using the driver’s mobile communication network. The system will allow authorities to arrive at the scene of the accident as soon as possible.

Al Maini said that it took three years to develop the ECall system, involving government and private companies, as well as auto concerns. The first mention of the start of system development appeared in the press in 2016.

Recall that similar systems already work in the world. In particular, the European system ECall for automatic warning of road traffic accidents is widely known, as well as ERA-GLONASS, the Russian state system for emergency response to accidents. ERA GLONASS is technologically compatible with the pan-European ECall system. In July 2013, the ERA GLONASS system was put into trial operation in 15 regions of Russia, comprehensive tests were carried out in 63 Russian regions in October of the same year. In December 2013, the system was fully deployed throughout Russia. On January 1, 2015, the system was put into commercial operation.
